Set off by bike from Moen
Cycling is an easy way to make the most of a stay at Trimaarzate. Follow the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal, then explore the Scheldt meadows, villages and rolling country roads. Choose your pace: a short loop with a food stop, a day on the junction network or a more demanding ride towards the Flemish Ardennes.
Start with our personal favourite, the Spierevalleiroute, or build your own ride. Below are the route resources and addresses we like to share with our guests.
Two routes to start with
Our personal tip: the Spierevalleiroute
The Spierevalleiroute remains one of our personal recommendations for your stay. Genieten op 2 Wielen provides the starting point and a description of the ride. Add the tourist information from Spiere-Helkijn when planning your day.
Scheldefietsroute: a varied day out
The Scheldefietsroute connects the canal with the Scheldt meadows at Avelgem and villages including Bossuit, Spiere and Helkijn. It also passes Transfo, a former power station. Expect waterside stretches, former railway paths and rolling country roads. Check the official route page for the current map, distance and practical details.
Plan your own cycling route
Build your own cycling route
Use the Lys region cycle route planner to create a loop that suits your group. Combine towpaths and country roads, choose your stops and review the current route before setting off. The Trimaarzate routes on Routezoeker provide further ideas for your stay.
The Trimaarzate greenway and more route ideas
The provincial page about the Trimaarzate greenway introduces the former railway line that gave our holiday home its name. Browse RouteYou for further cycling and mountain bike routes. Visit West-Vlaanderen and Toerisme Leiestreek offer more ideas for exploring the area.
Planning a longer cycling holiday
Use Icoonfietsroutes to plan a multi-day cycling trip. For more about the countryside and nature along the way, explore Regionaal Landschap Leie-Schelde. Combine these resources with your chosen route and check the itinerary before leaving.
A longer ride or a leisurely lunch
For more climbing, explore cycling routes in the Flemish Ardennes and choose a ride that matches everyone’s fitness. For a relaxed outing, plan a shorter loop with a stop from our food and drink guide.
Bike hire and planning your weekend
Ask Bikecare Wim about bike hire and available services. Book ahead for a group. Download your route and agree on distance, surfaces and breaks before leaving. Our cycling weekends page has more information about staying together at Trimaarzate.
Along the Scheldt towards Avelgem and Oudenaarde
Use Bossuit as the link between the canal and the Scheldt valley. Explore around Avelgem or plan a longer ride towards Kerkhove and Oudenaarde. Towpaths offer views over the water; connecting roads and the loop back to Moen determine the overall distance and climbing.
An out-and-back ride lets you choose your turning point. For a loop, plan the numbered junctions and check the return leg in advance. Avelgem’s cycling information helps you combine the canal, Scheldt and country roads.
Kwaremont and the climbs of the Flemish Ardennes
Kluisbergen and Oudenaarde are starting points for rides taking in the region’s famous climbs. Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg combine cobbles with uphill effort. Use the Flemish Ardennes tourism website to choose a ride suited to your experience.
If you set off from Trimaarzate, include the approach and return journey in your plans. To focus on the hills, you can take your bikes to a starting point in the region. Agree whether everyone will ride the same loop or whether leisure riders and road cyclists will follow separate routes.
