History

A name connected to the old railway

Trimaarzate holiday home takes its name from the walking and cycling path called ‘de Trimaarzate’. The province created the path on the former track bed of railway line 85, between Oudenaarde and Herseaux.

The story of the Trimards

The history of line 85 (1881–1959) is connected to the daily lives of workers from South-West Flanders. Large numbers of ‘Trimards’ took the train to work in the industrial towns of northern France.

The thriving textile industries of Roubaix, Tourcoing and Lille drew many workers from densely populated South-West Flanders. ‘Trimard’ remains a familiar term among local people.
